There were rumors circulating about another Chanel price increase, and last week (on November 3rd) it became a reality. Our sources alerted us early on that the bag prices would increase on the top-selling Classic Flap, Re-issue, Boy Bag, Trendy, and Chanel 19…and they went up by as much as $1,100 per style.

Here’s what we know so far:

Now you may be wondering why, and how this will impact the sales at your store. We don’t have all the answers, but all we can tell you is you better stock up. With the smaller bags increasing in price by over $1,000, this means staples like the Chanel Classic Jumbo and the Chanel Classic Maxi will come back in style. For a long time, shoppers chose the smalls and minis over the larger bags due the lower price point, but that’s about to change

Is Chanel worth it anymore?

Chanel handbags are highly coveted, iconic statement pieces whose demand will always be higher than supply. Chanel is well aware of this fact and will continue to boost the prices of their most-wanted bags because they know their consumers will continue to pay for it.

If you’ve got a bunch of Chanel aficionados who regularly shop your store and can’t get enough of it, then of course pre-owned Chanel is absolutely worth it! But if the prices keep climbing up to Hermés levels (well, here we are), what should you do? Since many people claim the quality has decreased over the years, does it makes sense for shoppers to buy brand new? Who knows, but the older versions will always be worth the investment.

**## Chanel or Hermés, or both?

It’s no secret Hermés is also trying to take control of the resale market by limiting their bags too. But if the price of a brand new Chanel Classic Flap Bag or the Reissue exceeds $10,000, will you stick with Chanel or jump ship and start investing in Hermés for your store? Or should you just load up on Gucci, Dior, and Prada bags instead? These are things to consider because (don’t fool yourself) additional increases and limitations are right around the corner.

Chanel & the Resale Marketbold text

Ok, I know you might be wondering if this is sustainable. Will consumers give up on Chanel all together or will they start investing in less expensive items by Chanel such as wallets and sunglasses? Or will they continue to buy Chanel bags, even if they go up to $15,000 per flap bag? Yes, these prices will dissuade some from buying Chanel bags, while others will be more inclined to stock up even more because of supply and demand.

As the prices of brand new Chanel bags continue to increase, the prices on the resale market will increase as well. Right now, the prices on the resale market are almost equal to the retail price, and many times they’re even higher! If anything, the demand on the secondary market has helped Chanel justify their price increases, which means those who already own Chanel bags should profit greatly once they decide to resell in the future.
