Fashion is like a fruit. You couldn't eat it a day before and you couldn't eat it a day after. It's just about today.
- Alber Elbaz
The fashion world is mourning the sudden loss of Alber Elbaz, the legendary fashion designer who single-handedly revived French fashion house, Lanvin, while he served as Creative Director from 2001-2015.
Born in Morocco and raised in Israel, Elbaz moved to NYC in the 1980s where he began his storied fashion career, first working for Geoffrey Beene. In 1996, he relocated to Paris to work for Guy LaRoche and then secured the opportunity of a lifetime...to succeed couture legend Yves Saint Laurent at the helm of his Rive Gauche ready-to-wear until it was taken over by Gucci Group and replaced by Tom Ford.
In 2001, Elbaz landed at Lanvin, a then little known, privately held French fashion house that was under the radar. But soon enough, thanks to his elegant, feminine designs, draping fabrics and a focus on giving ease to women, Elbaz was able to catapult the brand into the fashion universe.
Loved by celebrities and fashion editors alike, he re-introduced fancy sneakers with grosgrain laces, silk cocktail dresses, chic ballet flats, luxury costume jewelry, Grecian silhouettes, and dresses with multiple, industrial zips and raw edges.
At the time of his death due to COVID-19, he was mastering his own brand, AZ Factory.
We are on a journey to design beautiful, purposeful, solutions-driven fashion that works for everyone. We are life, not just lifestyle, a place to experiment and try new things, our way.
