Is your bag too good to be true? Or did you just get really lucky snagging the perfect carryall for a fraction of its retail value? Hate to break it to you but unless you're shopping on LePrix, there are fakes are out there and they are looking better by the day.
Anyone who’s serious about getting their hands on a designer handbag must do a lot of research to ensure their prized possession isn’t just a really good knock-off. There are a large number of counterfeit bags out there today.
No brand is safe from fakes and that’s especially true when it comes to the big-name designers. Thankfully, each designer has their own distinctive traits that are tell tale signs of the real from the fake. Never fear, we're here to tell you how to authenticate a Chanel bag.
When it comes to Chanel, certain subtleties in the material or hardware can be clear indicators of fraud. That’s why it’s so important to familiarize yourself with them so you can rest easy knowing your bag is legit.
Chanel bags are made from a lambskin or pebbled caviar leather, which creates distinctive and unique patterns upon close inspection. Take a look at the leather. Do you see a repeating pattern? If so, that’s a clear red flag.
As with all designer bags, bad stitching is a clear sign of a fake bag. Chanel bags, in particular, have a high number of stitches, which help maintain the bag's original shape. Authentic Chanel bags should have up to eleven stitches along each side of the square panels. Knock-off bags don’t usually share this quality and can have fewer stitches across each panel edge.
Chanel handbags have hologram stickers with serial numbers and a date code sewn inside the bag. The hologram stickers and serial numbers have changed almost every year since 1986 so it's important you compare the sticker in your bag to one of the Chanel hologram sticker guides you'll find online.
Sometimes the hologram stickers will fall off vintage or pre-owned Chanel bags, but that doesn't mean it's fake. You can usually tell sticker’s adhesive residue where it was once located.
Fake bags may also feature fake hologram stickers but they fall off easily. The fake ones are missing details. Chanel has details in their holograms.
The “CC lock” is a defining feature of the Chanel bag and has a number of subtle traits that counterfeiters can’t often replicate. Take a close look at the lock to make sure the right C passes over the top left and the left C passes over the bottom right. Now check the back of the lock. Does it say Chanel on the left and Paris on the right? If so, you may have the real deal, and of course, all the hardware on the bag should match in color.
These are just a few ways in which you could spot a fake, but we’re just scratching the surface.
