The Icon Series: Hermès Birkin
Most handbag lovers know that one cannot simply walk into an Hermès store and ask to buy a Birkin. Rumours have spread amongst people wanting to get their hands on a bag to skip the 'five-year' wait list, making connections sales associates and having a prior purchase history. Hermès is notoriously hush-hush about sales practices of Birkin, but the harder it is to get, the more people seem to want it. The Birkin remains the most sought-after item in the history of handbags, so what is the allure of the bag?

The story began when the actress, singer and 70's style icon Jane Birkin was placing her straw bag in the overhead compartment on a flight from Paris to London in 1981 when all the contents of her bag spilled out. Just so happened, she was sat next to none other than Jean-Louis Dumas, the chief executive of Hermès. Birkin told Dumas of her trouble finding a roomy weekend bag that she liked, which inspired Dumas to sketch and create a bag just for her, hence its name.

The bag was first introduced in 1984 but it didn't take off instantly. The Birkin only really solidified its status as a pop culture icon during the 1990s or the "It-Bag era". Today, the bag is the world's most sought-after bag and can be seen swinging on the arms of some of the world's richest and most famous. Women (and men!) have used it as travel, work, and even diaper bags, highlighting once again the durability of the bag.

Despite some minor changes, the design of the Birkin has remained unchanged and now comes in an array of the finest animal skins and a rainbow hue of colors.
