We’ve teamed up with two amazing tastemakers and fashion bloggers, Elle from ellechoi.com and Wesley from screamingmouth.com, to answer your every day fashion questions! Got a question, send us an email at: [email protected] or post the question on our Facebook wall. In this week's edition, what are 5 shoe staples every woman should have and how to branch out of a closet full of blue.
Q: What are five shoe staples that every woman should have in her closet to take her through the seasons?
Elle: Five shoe staples? That’s tough! I guess since I’m forced to narrow it down, I’ll try to choose wisely and think about the five I could not live without going through the four seasons.
This for sure is a staple since you’ll need it for your LBD, your suits, cute party outfits and even with your black skinny jeans! It’s such a sharp, versatile shoe that can complete any look, adding a polished finish. I own two: a closed toe and peep toe.
2. NUDE PUMPS
Again, nude pumps are a staple in my closet and I have a few of these as well. They are perfect for when I don’t want that harsh black to complete a lighter (color), more springy outfit. Plus nude is perfect for any bright color, white or when you’re wearing a crazy print and want to tone it down with a neutral colored shoe. I even love nude with black or this spring’s biggest trend: optical black and whites.
I love a gold accent anywhere in my outfits—I’ve been extremely partial to gold ever since I exited my Tiffany’s stage circa 2003. In the summer, I’m usually seen in fun, bright colors and I love to pair down my maxis, shorts, and summer dresses with flat sandals (perfect for running around or going on vacay), so bolder alternatives to nude are its neighbors, silver and gold! It’s easy, it’s smart, it’s cute. Plus, metallic shoes will add style to any outfit.
Self-explanatory, no? I love black booties in the fall/winter to go with your skinny jeans and dresses and skirts with opaque black tights. It’s just so chic.
5. A FUN COLOR
Whether you choose a sexy, red heel, a strappy, turquoise sandal or neon yellow flats, have some fun and explore your bold side by adding a pop of color in your shoe collection! Exotic animal prints apply as well.
So that is of course if I absolutely had to narrow it down to 5 shoes to take me through the seasons. But you know I would’ve loved to throw in some killer OTK boots for winter, a neon sneaker for the gym, a sparkly heel for your parties, and TOMS for when you’re on the go! (Oops… Did I just cheat?) Hope this will take you 5 steps closer to your shoessentials!
Q: I looked in my closet and realized all my clothes are blue! How do I add color to my wardrobe and look profesional yet hip at work?
Wes: Men are creatures of habit. This is why our significant others often times feel the need to chime in. This situation could be a lot worse, however. Blue is very versatile. Assuming electric blue isn't what's dominating your closet, adding color is super easy. Assuming darker shades of blue are prevalent, add variations of pale blue and other pastel tones. If you're comfortable with pink, that looks great with navy, and most women love pink on men. Mint green as well as yellow are great options, too. Keep in mind, if you're not into how bold these may look, pretty much any shade of gray will go with blue, as will most browns. When wearing a blue suit, a lot of men wear black shoes, but I prefer brown. To me, it's a lot more fashionable, and as you further expand your color tolerance, look into getting an English tan pair. Compliments will start coming your way, no doubt.
